How to Deal with all of the Different Types of Student

Slackers are some of the most annoying people that you can meet. They will not generally come across rude or smart, or stupid, or kind etc. One of your best friends could be a slacker – but you will not know until you are doing a project together, and at the end you realise that you have done all of the work for the group and they have contributed nothing. But they are quite happy to take half (or if they are really obnoxious, more than half) of the credit.

You might confront them afterwards and tell them such, but they will have a lame excuse up their sleeve that will make it seem like they did all of the work, and not the other way around. The best thing to do if you are friends with a slacker; is to simply not do projects with them. If they are genuinely stuck on a question then help them out, but don’t constantly give them answers until you have once again done all of the work for them.

If they ask to be part of your group, try to steer away from it or say no. If you feel obliged to accept, then make it very clear who’s role is who’s; don’t do their part. When the teacher asks why only half of the presentation is done – tell them the truth. As harsh as this is; you did make it clear to the friend before, so they hopefully will forgive you.

Avoidance or direct confrontation is best when dealing with a slacker, and if they are mean to you then they are a bully (which is an entirely different matter and I will do a post in the near-ish future).
