How to Learn a New Language (Part 2) – Without Revising

So, you guys really liked my post yesterday; so, I decided to make another one! This post, however, has nothing to do with revision. I said yesterday you were hoping for a miracle cure to all of your future language tests, and I said that it was not possible without revising. I still stand by that statement, but there are other things that you can do to get better at a language than lots of endless practise.

Firstly, going on holiday to a country that speaks the language that you are trying to learn. Don’t just stay within the hotel and resort that you are staying in, go out on day trips, or to the market etc. Try to speak to people and understand what they say. It is amazing how good your day to day language can get within a few weeks. If you can, go on an exchange there, because staying with the family will force you to speak their language. Better still, emigrate there and learn by living there for a few years, then you will be really fluent (OK, this one might be a bit far).

Secondly, read simple children’s books in that language; try to understand it, better still, get a book with both the language that you want to learn and your native tongue. I am currently reading a Chinese comic book with both the English and the Chinese.

Finally, when you are in your language lessons, try to only speak to other people in the class in that language, not English. Try to get the rest of the class to do the same. Your speaking of that language will dramatically increase due to you speaking it for a few hours each week.
