I know that you guys were expecting a post on Explanations, but I forgot to mention the Point of each paragraph that you write in an essay.
Now, for the next four day (including today) I will talk about one paragraph of an essay and how to structure it.
The first and most important part of an essay is the Point. It needs to introduce the evidence that will support it, as well as engage the reader into wanting to read the paragraph. It needs to be bold or controversial, and be the driving point of that paragraph. These work as mini-introductions (sort of) to the paragraph, and they should (in most cases) contain a discourse marker. These help to structure the essay and help the reader to “navigate” the essay. These include: Firstly, Secondly (etc.), Finally, In conclusion, Therefore, However and so on.
Tune in tomorrow to see how the Point of a paragraph links into the Evidence; and how we can make an amazing paragraph that takes up half of a page!
